Naturalization Ceremony at Beeman

Beeman Hosts the Naturalization Ceremony!

By Sara and Harper, 6th Grade Students

Beeman Elementary School in New Haven, Vermont hosted a naturalization ceremony for 26 immigrants from 18 countries (Australia, Belarus, Bhutan, Burundi, Canada, Chile, Congo, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Italy, Jamaica, Macedonia, Mexico, Myanmar, People’s Republic of China, United Kingdom, Vietnam) to become American citizens on April 12th, 2018. The 4-6 students created tulips out of paper, and the K-3 students made little butterflies that lined the gymnasium.

When the students and adults entered the gym, a band was playing in the background and everyone took to their seats. The colors were soon brought in, and everyone stood. A group (the chorus) from Mt. Abraham Union High School called “Sweet Transitions” performed the national anthem.

After the introduction of the guests, the immigrants were called up for an oath that basically said that the immigrants were giving up citizenship in their country and will always be loyal to the United States of America. The immigrants were now ready to become citizens. Called up by name, each citizen one by one received a certificate. The Beeman Student Council then gave the immigrants their hopes and dreams for them.

The Beeman chorus performed two songs, “These Green Mountains” and “Home” by Phillip Phillips. Afterwards, the whole school (K-6) sang two songs also, “Count On Me” by Bruno Mars and “This Land Is Your Land” which everyone was invited to sing along.

The colors then retire, and the ceremony is adjourned. There was a reception while the students cleaned up and served cake/refreshments. The students cannot wait for the next naturalization ceremony!

A Poem by Jen H.

The tears dripping down their faces

Everyone clapping,

smiling, having fun

seeing their family member or members

Getting that piece of paper

saying they are now a American Citizen.

All of the kids singing to everyone,

singing from their heart.

Katy Farber Author Visit

Katy Farber, Vermont author and educator, visited the K-3 classes at Beeman to talk about her new book, Salamander Sky.  Her engaging book is about salamander migration during rainy April nights.  Katy brought with her a guest, Carol, from the Otter Creek Audubon Society who discussed her work helping salamanders and frogs cross dangerous roads during migration.

We owe tremendous thanks to Jenny Lyons from the Vermont Book Shop in Middlebury for organizing this amazing visit.  Thank you Katy, Carol, and Jenny!
